I Let You Go
[My Review]
I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh is a twisty, engrossing psychological thriller that’s now become one of my favourite books from this genre that I’ve read all year!
Clare Mackintosh has created convincing characters that provoke a range of emotions in the reader- or it did with me anyway! I really hated with a passion some characters and found myself unexpectedly warming to others as the novel went on. People aren’t always what they seem and I felt myself become really interested in some of the characters’ lives.
I really liked the fact that we got to see the situation from both sides; the police working to solve the case and the civilians dealing with the aftermath. The combination of Police procedure and thoughts and feelings of other characters was really enjoyable to read about. I didn’t like how the main Police Officer, Ray, was an idiot quite a lot in his personal life and as a resulr I often felt quite frustrated with him, but I enjoyed the fact that the story did include his family life as well as just focussing on the investigation.
I’m not giving anything away by saying that there’s a big twist- the front of my copy of the book says this  as clear as anything- but I did think it was done really well, and it certainly surprised me! There are quite a few smaller twists throughout the novel too. I love books that keep me guessing but I love books that lull you into a false sense of security then completely surprise you even more!
I would definitely recommend this novel. It was well written and had the perfect mix of twists and turns, police developments and character development. At times some of the subject matter was fairly upsetting but that’s because the author’s writing is so convincing, and as a reader you feel so invested in some of the characters.
All in all a brilliant read!
