My review:
Conviction is a brilliantly-plotted thriller which combines drama and suspense with a legal setting – resulting in an addictive read!
The story follows Barrister Neve Harper as she is assigned a case to defend Wade Darling, who is accused of killing his wife and children but maintains his innocence. Neve’s career is on a great trajectory, so she seems the best person for the job – until she gets a chilling visit from a man who tells her she must lose the case otherwise the secret she’s been hiding will be revealed and the people closest to her will be in danger…
It’s a book that makes you wonder “What would I do in that situation?”, and I always enjoy those kinds of plots. Neve is conflicted and we see her battle against herself to work out if she can still defend Wade whilst protecting her family. She’s a great character and I really enjoyed reading about her as she felt like a realistic, well-rounded person.
I haven’t read any other books by Jack Jordan but this really makes me want to. It’s fast-paced (though the middle felt a bit slower in parts), the legal side isn’t too confusing – everything feels well explained and clear – and it manages to be dramatic without feeling unrealistic. Conviction is an engaging, accessible read that is bound to keep you up late to finish it!
