All The Rage by Cara Hunter #review

[Synopsis]

A teenage girl is found wandering the outskirts of Oxford, dazed and distressed. The story she tells is terrifying. Grabbed off the street, a plastic bag pulled over her face, then driven to an isolated location where she was subjected to what sounds like an assault. Yet she refuses to press charges.

DI Fawley investigates, but there’s little he can do without the girl’s co-operation. Is she hiding something, and if so, what? And why does Fawley keep getting the feeling he’s seen a case like this before?

And then another girl disappears, and Adam no longer has a choice: he has to face up to his past. Because unless he does, this victim may not be coming back…

[My Review]

All The Rage is another fantastic release in the DI Adam Fawley series, continuing with the great characters in Fawley’s team and an intriguing storyline. A girl seems to have been abducted and assaulted, but doesn’t want to press charges. Then another girl disappears, and the team try to work out whether they’re connected, and what the first victim may have been hiding…

I really enjoy the multiple narrative structure in these books – the main narrator is Fawley but we also see parts of the story from his team as well, and the non-Police characters too. This gives a great insight into the story and a richer understanding of the thoughts and feelings of not just the people who have been victims of the crime but also their friends and family – which is particularly useful as the plot addresses some serious and timely issues.

All The Rage also strikes the perfect balance – it’s well-written, feels as well-researched as all of Cara Hunter’s excellent novels often seem to be, and is fast-paced without feeling rushed. Fawley is a great main character – he’s shrewd, hard-working and actually cares.

The storyline with his girlfriend (who is pregnant) adds an extra layer of empathy and makes me see him in a softer light. This is definitely keeping up the excellent standard of these books, which is fast becoming one of my favourite crime series. Highly recommended!
