[Synopsis]

Your mother has a secret.
Do you really want to know what it is?
Stella’s mum, Emma, has always been a little strange, but now she’s behaving really oddly. Stella is convinced her mother has a secret. She knows something terrible happened in her mum’s past, but she doesn’t know what; even her dad, Jack, says Emma won’t talk to him about it.
The teenager decides to follow her mother and find out what she’s hiding. But Stella has a dark secret of her own.
Nothing can prepare Stella for the shocking truth. And now she knows that if anyone else finds out their secrets, the revelation will tear their family apart.

[My Review]

I am a huge fan of Sanjida Kay, having raved about Bone by Bone and The Stolen Child [read my 5* reviews here and here]. So I was really excited to see that she has a new release, My Mother’s Secret – a story that in some ways is fairly different to her other two but is equally as gripping!
Focusing more on a family with a mother that has a big secret, this novel addresses a whole range of issues whilst slowly revealing what Emma is hiding as the novel goes on. Bit by bit the reader starts to realise that people are linked in surprising ways, and I loved the slow reveal of clues and information.
This isn’t a fast-paced, all-action novel; rather it’s a steady but completely absorbing story which I raced through in no time at all. The characters are all so well crafted and convincing (as, I feel, is always the case in Sanjida Kay’s novels) and there were some truly heartbreaking decisions for characters in this novel.
I don’t want to say much more, as I don’t want to spoil anything, but to me the ending was surprising but just right and it really makes you think about how you’d react in the same situation. I hugely enjoyed this read and would definitely recommend it!

[Rating: 5/5]

Many thanks to Corvus and Netgalley for providing a copy of this novel on which I chose to write an honest and unbiased review.

    • Glad to hear you found the ending of The Stolen Child surprising! I hope you enjoy My Mother’s Secret. Thank you, Laura, for a great review. I think you’re the first blogger to review my novel!

  1. I was reading this when the flu knocked me out. I then had to abandon it completely so I wouldn’t miss out on blog tour commitments but I can’t wait to get back to it. Hopefully tomorrow!
